The agricultural sector in Jamaica encounters numerous obstacles that hinder its growth and development. One major challenge is the lack of access to financing, which is exacerbated by high-interest rates, collateral requirements, seasonality, and cash flow difficulties.
Surprisingly, less than 2% of Jamaica’s commercial lending portfolio is dedicated to agriculture (as reported by the Bank of Jamaica), and only a mere 10% of Jamaican farmers have access to credit, according to Jamaica’s National Financial Inclusion Strategy for the years 2016-2020. This leaves the majority of farmers dependent on informal sources or self-financing. Consequently, their limited access to credit restricts their ability to invest in essential equipment, technology, and inputs necessary for improving productivity and expanding their operations.
Considering these challenges, the Agro-Investment Corporation has organized an Agri-Business Financing Webinar to explore the Agriculture MSME Loan Facility and GEMINI programmes. These initiatives provide exceptional financial support and technical assistance to agribusiness investors, including farmers, empowering them to flourish and prosper.
Our esteemed guest speaker, a representative from the DBJ, will provide in-depth insights into the intricacies of these programmes, ensuring that the target audience understands their remarkable benefits comprehensively.
